So we’re a “sustainable” company…

But how are

we sustainable?

Without a solid “how” in place, the word sustainability could mean literally anything. So, in the spirit of transparency, we’d like to share all the ways in which we achieve sustainability in our business practices and products…

Our Products

Smart product design is at the forefront of all our decisions. Each of our products is intended to either replace a single use item in your home, or act as a less wasteful alternative to everyday items. We are committed to replacing your less green items with reusables that are not only better for the planet and your wallet, but work better too!

  • Our current product assortment can completely replace the following single-use items in your home:

    • Plastic or paper grocery bags (or even those flimsy reusable ones)

    • Plastic produce bags

    • Paper lunch bags

    • Plastic wrap

    • Zip-lock baggies

    • Tin foil

    • Paper towels

    • Paper napkins

    • Tissues

    • Glasses cleaners

    • Disposable duster heads

    • Baby wipes

    • Sanitizing wipes

    • Toilet paper

    • Cotton Balls/Rounds

    • Makeup Wipes

    • Sponges

    • Tea bags

    • Coffee filters

    • and more…

  • Paperless Towels are our top selling item. As of October 1, 2023 we have replaced over 212,000 rolls of disposable paper towels, and that number grows each time our customers wash and reuse their roll of our paperless towels.

Our Paperless Napkins, Reusable Toilet Roll, Cotton Rounds, and Cat Toys are all made with scrap fabric left over from the production of our Paperless Towels. Because of this, we have very little true fabric waste at the end of our production. All of these (excluding cat toys) also replace single use items in your home!

  • As beekeepers ourselves, we know that beeswax can be a magical ingredient from a skincare perspective. It has antimicrobial properties and creates a barrier on your skin to seal in moisture and prevent dryness.

Beeswax also allows our moisturizers to be solid, which not only makes the product last MUCH longer, but also reduces the size and weight for shipping, making it a more sustainable option due to its reduced shipping footprint.

  • All product packaging is either home compostable or able to be returned and reused.

We are specific about our compostable packaging being HOME compostable as we recognize that industrial composting is not accessible to most people, whereas home composting can be done at any scale in any home.

Our Production Practices

Products that help our customers be more sustainable are useless unless we practice what we preach during production! Here are a few ways we keep production sustainable…

  • We use only OEKO-TEX 100 STANDARD Certified 100% Cotton fabric to produce all of our sewn products (except for Duster Heads). We do sew these with 100% Polyester thread, but there are a few reasons for that, which ironically are focused in sustainability. In the 20+ years I have been sewing, I have always found that it holds up better than any other fiber content of thread no matter what the content of the base goods is – this means that the parts I have full control over on the product are less likely to break and it allows us to provide a 2 year warranty on the stitching through our repairs program. The other reason is because Cotton thread tends to break often when sewing, which causes more waste in the production process.

  • Our duster heads are made from 100% Polyester fleece. While many self-proclaimed “zero wasters” will balk at the idea of a plastic fiber anywhere in their household, we are intentional with our choice of this fabrication.

Polyester is a much more effective dust collector than cotton as it holds a static charge VERY well (Ever gotten shocked taking a fleece blanket out of a dryer?). Because of this, it is more likely to be our customers’ first choice in dusting implement rather than falling into old habits and reaching for those disposable S**f*er heads!

We are also very specific about which polyester fleece we will use. All of our dusters are made with either fleece that was purchased second hand in the form of blankets or pajamas, or new pre-consumer fabric waste that would otherwise end up in landfill. This not only gives potential waste fabric a new life, but also helps keep costs affordable for our customers, although it is more labor intensive for our marketing team to continually be photographing new prints.

  • Our beeswax wraps are made with 100% Cotton fabric that is printed by our friends at Spoonflower. Spoonflower operates on a print-on-demand model, which minimizes fabric and ink waste.

Spoonflower is committed to reducing waste in the textile industry stream, and uses printing practices that reduce water consumption and water based non-toxic inks on earth friendly fabrics.

Spoonflower supports the independent artist community by allowing anyone and everyone to sell their designs printed on any of Spoonflowers many product offerings (fabrics, wallpaper, home décor, and more!) through a commission model.

  • Nearly half of our product assortment is made entirely with fabric scraps from production of our other items, and we are always coming up with more ideas…

    • Paperless Napkins

    • Reusable Toilet Roll

    • Cotton Rounds

    • Tea Bags

    • Coffee Filters

    • Cat Toys

Although most of our waste fabric is utilized to create new products, it is impossible to use it ALL.

We do our best to keep it out of landfill by paying a little more to use textile recycling services like Terracycle and the For Days Take Back Bag, where unusable fabric scraps are broken down and converted into new fabrics, home insulation, and more.

We recognize that textile recycling programs are not a perfect solution, but we are constantly coming up with new ideas to reuse our scraps before having to recycle them, and love hearing new ideas!

  • All ingredients in our formulated products are USDA Certified Organic.

The only exception to this rule is beeswax. Fun fact: organic beeswax (or honey) does not exist. This is because honeybees travel up to 3 miles per day while they are foraging for pollen and nectar. So, in order for their wax or honey to be organic, all plants grown within a 3 mile radius to each hive would also need to be certified organic.

Typically, honey or beeswax marked as “organic” in the US has been imported from China. Import laws require the country of import to accept any certifications provided by the country of export, which often do not have as high of standards for organic growing as the USDA.

  • As beekeepers ourselves, we know that not all beeswax is created equally, and beekeeping can be harmful instead of helpful if the hives and surrounding pollinator forage are not managed properly.

We utilize as much of our own beeswax as possible, and when we need to supplement, work only with beekeepers we have thoroughly vetted and trust are managing their honeybees in a sustainable manner, making sure they aren’t harming their own livestock or any native pollinators.

  • In addition to fabric scraps, waste in many forms is an unfortunate reality of production. However, with proper trash sorting, we are able to only produce one bag of true “trash” about every other month!

Anything compostable gets added to our homestead compost piles, which are utilized for our vegetable garden each year.

Soft plastics are re-imagined into decking and furniture using Trex’s recycling program.

Cardboard boxes and packing paper from our supplies are re-used to ship out orders, and containers from are supplies are re-used whenever possible as finished product storage or for helping out with other things around the homestead.

  • They say one (wo)man’s trash is another’s treasure… and we take that very literally around here!

Did you know that every cardboard tube used to roll our Paperless Towels or Reusable Toilet Rolls was originally headed for landfill? These are donated to us by folks who have yet to become full Paperless converts, but are still trying to do their part. As of October 1, 2023, we have “rescued” 1,400 empty paper towel tubes from being thrown out, and have given them a new life!

Not only do we accept other peoples’ trash, but we also give out our own! We donate fabric bolts, thread cones, and other items to local preschools to be used in craft projects. We are also always happy to share our “bounty” of paper towel and toilet paper tubes with others!

  • All of our products are handmade in house by a small team of skilled artisans, right here in New Jersey. We pay our workers above minimum wage and foster a fun and creative work environment where all opinions and responsibilities are valued and respected.

If you’re local, we’d love for you to join our team!

  • Whenever possible, we reuse boxes, mailers, and packing materials that have been sent to us by one of our suppliers or from personal packages any of our employees have received.

When it’s not feasible to re-use, we exclusively utilize home compostable mailers either from EcoEnclose or NoIssue - and what’s even better is that the NoIssue ones can be re-used with the additional adhesive strip before composting!

We try our best to fit our packaging to the products purchased so there is very little need for additional packing materials, but when there is a need, it is always re-used kraft paper or corn-based packing peanuts.
